Going deeper than the surface

There is no shortage of information in the world today — but very little of it helps us better understand what's happening in our own communities.

The Fraser Valley is changing — growing, evolving, and facing complex challenges across community life, cultural dynamics, healthcare, civic engagement, and more. But most conversations stay at the surface. Hidden Valley goes deeper.

Through thoughtful, in-depth conversations with leaders, professionals, and people on the ground, each episode uncovers insight, tension, and human impact — so listeners walk away with a clearer understanding of the place they live.

Hidden Valley also exists to celebrate and shine a light on the innovators and change-makers who are quietly doing remarkable work in this region — people who rarely seek the spotlight but are reshaping the Fraser Valley in ways that deserve to be known.

At its heart, this podcast is an invitation to think more carefully before we judge. We live in an era of easy outrage and hardened positions — where people who see the world differently can quickly become the other. Hidden Valley believes that most people, including those who challenge or even offend us, are more complex, more motivated by genuine conviction, and more worthy of understanding than our first reaction suggests.

Host & Producer

Deep roots. Broad perspective.

Ken Baerg is a social entrepreneur, community activist, and labour relations practitioner with three decades of experience across the private, public, and community sectors. Among his most cherished initiatives, Ken founded the Run for Water Society in 2008 — a non-profit that has raised over $6 million to support communities in Ethiopia through Abbotsford's largest local run and associated fundraising events.

He is also the founder of — and continues to be operationally involved with — Canadian Work Strategies, an organization dedicated to working collaboratively with labour and management to develop progressive labour relations frameworks customized to workplaces across the country.

Ken has also served as Director of Economic Development for the City of Abbotsford, where he was charged with cultivating the conditions for a robust and diversified tax base — fostering a healthy business climate that attracted investment, supported business growth, and created meaningful employment opportunities for residents.

He has served on numerous Fraser Valley community boards over the years, published widely on labour and community policy, and remains deeply embedded in the region's civic life. He holds graduate and undergraduate credentials in Strategic Management and Business and Political Science.
